Storing Parameters in AWS using MATLAB

In a previous blog post, Notifications from MATLAB, I showed how Amazon's Notification system (AWS SNS) can be used from MATLAB service can be used to easily send information between endpoints in a distributed system, be they applications or people. In this short post I want to show how MathWorks tools can use another AWS service - the Simple Systems...

Modifying Part of the Layout of a MATLAB GraphPlot

I'm working on a script that visualizes the structure of our website. This is done by plotting a graph object where the nodes are our website pages and the edges represent the parent and child relationships of the sections. This results in a graphplot object. I want to manually modify the spacing between some of the nodes after plotting with...

Happy Crepusculus! Never heard of Crepusculus? I'll come back to that later. Instead, let me begin with a fun fact: the shortest day of the year is December 21st. What? You already knew that fun fact? Okay smarty-pants, here's a trick follow-up question: when is the earliest sunset? It turns out it comes well before the shortest day....

How to Overlay a Color on an Image Using a Mask

In my first year of writing this blog (2006!), I showed how to overlay a color onto an image based on a mask. This was the example I gave back then: I wrote a function called imoverlay to handle all the details, and I submitted it to the File Exchange.About three and a half years ago, in R2016a, the Image...

A GitHub Badge for the File Exchange

Only last month I was talking about badges on the File Exchange. Today I'm going to tell you about another kind of badge: the GitHub badge. For a few years now (since 2014), GitHub and the File Exchange have been on a first name basis. That is to say, you can put your MATLAB code into a repo on GitHub...

Sean's pick this week is py_addpath directory matlab_too by Eric Fields. Using Python with MATLAB Do you have some Python code from a colleague or a snippet from GitHub that you'd like to use in MATLAB and not have to rewrite it? You can do that through the Python Interface for MATLAB. A simple "hello...

Scene Classification Using Deep Learning

This is a post from Oge Marques, PhD and Professor of Engineering and Computer Science at FAU, and of course famous for his post on?image augmentation. He's back to talk about scene classification, with great code for you to try. You can also follow him on Twitter (@ProfessorOge) Automatic scene classification (sometimes referred to as scene recognition, or scene...

Will's pick this week is Interpolation Utilities by Joe Henning. As most of you are probably aware, interpolation is the task of estimating the value of a data set inbetween known data points. There are a variety of numeric methods for interpolation. Joe's contribution is a handy repository of 37 of these methods. A few of them have built-in...

Where Are They Now? Nathan Gyger, Speedgoat

Today we’re talking to Nathan Gyger from Speedgoat. As a student at Bern University of Applied Sciences?between 2012 and 2015, Nathan participated in Formula Student Germany. What Did You Learn in Formula Student? “By participating in an engineering competition it was possible to learn how to properly engineer.” Why did you choose to get involved in Formula...

How to Read and Visualize a DICOM Volume

Earlier this year, I learned something about DICOM datasets that surprised me. I had downloaded a Head-Neck CT+PET study, and I wanted to create a volume array in MATLAB. I tried to do this the hard way at first, and of course I got it wrong. (Spoiler: there's an easy way.)I naively assumed that there was some meaning to the...

New in R2019b: Subsystem Reference

Today I want to introduce my favorite new feature in MATLAB R2019b: Subsystem Reference Let's see what is it, how it works, and when you should be using it. Creating a Subsystem File In R2019b, we are introducing a new type of block diagram. In addition to model files and library files, it is now possible to create subsystem files:...

Animating mathematical functions

Jiro's Pick this week is Plot Gui 2d by Silas Henderson. This entry is one of many interactive apps that Silas has created, and I had been quite intrigued by many of his entries. I chose to highlight "Plot GUI 2d" because of its simple, but useful application for teaching mathematical concepts. Visualization helps students understand concepts, and animation increases that...

Trajectory Planning for Robot Manipulators

NOTE: While this post will talk specifically about manipulators, many of the concepts discussed apply to other types of systems such as self-driving cars and unmanned aerial vehicles. Stability of Kuramoto Oscillators

I am working with Indika Rajapakse and Steve Smale to investigate the stability of the dynamic system describing Kuramoto oscillators. Indika and Steve are interested in Kuramoto oscillators for two reasons; the self synchronization provides a model of the cells in a beating heart and the dynamic system is an example for Morse-Smale theory. I am personally interested in the Kuramoto model as it relates to deep brain stimulation (DBS) for open-loop control of human movement disorders. My kuramoto program demonstrates both stable and unstable critical points. Roundoff error may destabilize an unstable critical point....
